An ignition switch is very important for any vehicle. If it is not working properly, there are lots o problems that that can cause. The switch acts as a starter so that the other parts of the car that work when the ignition is turned on can work. Without it, a driver can experience car trouble. There are a number of ways to tell when a car has ignition switch problems.
When The Panel Does Not Light Up
The panel is the instrument panel that is on the dashboard that tells a driver if the ignition is working properly. The lights on the panel are the off, on and start. In off mode the dashboard lights are all off but once the ignition is turned to on, the dashboard lights. The start is when the driver turns the ignition key to start the engine. A problematic switch will not prompt the lighting of the dashboard when the key is turned to on. This problem should be fixed right away when spotted.
Engine Starting Then Stalling
This is another common problem that affects most drivers. Once the key is in the ignition and turned to start, the engine should run without stopping. If it powers on then off without the driver turning the ignition key to off then that is a sign that the switch is probably not working. It is important to mention though that this could also be a problem with the vehicle’s engine.
Failing To Start Completely
This is also another common sign that the switch is having problems. If the key is placed in the switch and it fails to power on when turned then the switch probably needs to be replaced. This problem is different from the engine stalling and most times is purely a faulty switch that is the cause.
If The Switch Is Overheating
The switch should never be overly hot to the touch. It can sometimes get warm in most models of cars but too much heat signifies a problem. If the switch is overheating, it could likely be a problem with the wires that are connected which enable the car to start. This problem should be handled immediately because if left for long it can cause the car to stop when being driven and fail to start completely.
Malfunctioning Dashboard Lights
Appart from the lights mentioned above, there are also the other lights like brake light and charge light. When the switch is in the on or start position, they should all be on. If they are off, this means the switch is most likely problematic.
How To Fix A Faulty Switch
Most switches that are faulty often need to be replaced. A good mechanic can decide whether a switch can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced wholly. If it is being replaced, the process should be done by a competent mechanic who is familiar with the model of the car. Failure to place the new switch in properly can cause accidents when driving.
